The Conference of the Episcopate of Dominican Roman Catholic bishops urged the government to concentrate its efforts, capacity and resources on the basic priorities of the country. It identified these are health, education, water services, housing and expediting communication. In a subtle suggestion to the government that the Santo Domingo metro is not a priority, the bishops said that a wise and healthy policy of setting priorities calls for the postponing interesting and convenient works for when resources allow these. “We must set well our priorities, with an action plan that establishes a hierarchy of these because not all have the same value, the same transcendency, nor the same urgency. We need to order our objectives according to these three realities,” stated the bishops.
The bishops also focused on the need for the power service to improve. The bishops pointed out that when there is an improvement in the service, then a definite solution can be found to end the theft of the service by the poor that could be paying for the service. The bishops urged that business and government work together to find solutions to the electricity problems.
Referring to the priorities, the episcopate also mentioned that farming and forestry should be among the country’s priorities. They stressed that the country has conditions to become self sufficient in food production and to be able to produce for export.
