Nearly 1.1 million jobs in the DR are provided by small business, many more than by the hotel and restaurant (tourism) industry, the industrial free zones, and the farming sector. Marina Ortiz, the director of research for Fondomicro, explains that small business is responsible for 23% of the Gross Domestic Product’s growth. Fondomicro recently conducted a nationwide survey that found 359,304 small businesses operating in the country. She concluded that the DR’s economy is one of micro and small companies, she told the Listin Diario. Of the total, 40% are located in the National District or the Province of Santo Domingo. Another 26.3% are located in other urban areas and 39.8% in rural areas. The Central Bank estimates that 30% of all jobs are generated by small business.
