According to the National Police Report, in 2004 there were 1,750 homicides compared to 1,099 in 2000. The numbers for 2004 are 6% higher than those for 2003. Of all the homicides, 1,131 were committed by men and of the victims, 1,616 were men. Firearms were used in 1,140 of the cases. There were also 232 suicides and 3,800 were wounded by firearms. One half of the crimes took place in or around the National District (Santo Domingo).
