Schools and schools

Hoy newspaper Coctelera column comments today that every Dominican should be concerned about the deficit of public school classrooms. He urges that the government vary its policy for building the schools. He says that the government program contemplates the construction of so-called school “palaces”, even in far away communities. He mentions that these cost millions and millions and then the money to maintain them has been lacking. As the years go by, then the only solution is to spend more millions to build another large school. He asks if it is not possible to build installations, with the construction type used by Carrefour, the large shopping mall of Autopista Duarte. He tells the story of Horacio Alvarez Savinon, who then President Joaquin Balaguer appointed president of the Year of Education. Alvarez campaigned for small low-budget schools to be built, but the engineers who preferred to spend millions on the construction of a single school, rejected the proposal. At the end, honest and well-meaning Alvarez had little to show for the year of education.
