A World Bank loan for US$150 million to cover deficits in the energy sector is in trouble, according to Christina Malmberg Calvo, the local World Bank representative. According to the Listin Diario, if the Dominican Congress does not ratify the project for technical assistance before 28 April, the Executive Board of the bank will not approve the loan. Malmberg Calvo told the reporters that her office would not submit the loan, a quick disbursement loan at that, unless the local Congress had not approved and signed the technical assistance package. This is part of two projects that are on file awaiting approval by the Dominican legislature. Malmberg Calvo was interviewed as she attended a meeting of the National Council of Business that marked the International Women’s Day. The World Bank representative was quite clear as she told reporters that “there is no way our board of directors is going to approve the quick disbursement loan if there is no support for the much needed reforms within the energy sector.”
