Focus on Santo Domingo

President Leonel Fernandez will open the First Congress on Santo Domingo 2015 tomorrow. The event will present new trends in urban models. It seeks to take a futuristic look at Santo Domingo is headed, from the perspective of architects who have contributed to the successes of other cities around the world.

The event is to be sponsored by the municipal government of Santo Domingo and Mayor Roberto Salcedo is the prime organizer.

The conference will examine city problems over the next ten years and will aim to provide adequate solutions. It will address matters such as civil security, urban mobility, commercial competition and other topics.

It is scheduled to take place 16-18 March in the capital city.

The scheduled talks open to the public at the Hotel Melia Santo Domingo are:

Jordi Borja will speak on the New Paradigm of Strategic Urban Planning in the Context of Local Development on Thursday, 17 March at 8 am. Jordi Borja is one of the leading spokesmen in Spain for new urban models.

Enrique Penalosa will speak on Public Space as Generator of Human Development and Social Equity on Thursday, 17 March at 2:30 pm. Penalosa is known for the success of the TransMilenio bus system in Bogota, when he was Mayor of that city and spearheaded the new urban renewal of Bogota.

Alfonso Vegara’s talk on Friday, 18 March at 8 am is titled Intelligent Territories. Vegara is president of the International Society of City and Regional Planners and Fundacion Metropolis,
