Tall ships coming to the DR

Americas? Sail, the Western Hemisphere?s spectacular tall ship event, is coming to the Dominican Republic next year. Santo Domingo and La Romana have been chosen as ports of call for the A-Class Race for the Americas? Sail Gold Trophy. A-Class ships are large schooners with more than three masts usually used for naval training.

Sail America 2006 will be making a stopover at the Marina de Casa de Campo in La Romana and at the Port of Santo Domingo in mid June. During a maritime festival planned for the occasion in Santo Domingo, the winning ship will receive the Americas Sail 2006 cup. From Santo Domingo, the ships will leave for Beaufort, North Carolina, for the Class B (smaller two mast ships) race will take place.

Sail America 2006 begins with a week long Fortaleza Sail Festival in Brazil (27 May-3 June). The Class A ships race to the Dominican Republic on 4 June with scheduled arrival at Casa de Campo Marina on 14-15 June. On 17 June, a Parade of Sail will follow to Santo Domingo. From 17-19 June, a Santo Domingo Sail Festival will take place. On 18 June, the Class A Trophy presentation will be held.

Americas? Sail started in 1988 as an ongoing opportunity for the western hemisphere to entertain the world at an event that encourages international sailing competition and promotes the brotherhood of the sea.

In the Dominican Republic, the event is organized by the Dominican Naval League and the Marina de Casa de Campo.
