City Mayor Roberto Salcedo inaugurated the Congress of Santo Domingo 2015 yesterday, an event that seeks to establish a vision for the capital city into the next 10 years. In his inaugural words, the Mayor spoke about how the Congress seeks to help them develop the Strategic Plan Santo Domingo 2015 as a tool to fight chaos, environmental contamination, lack of public spaces and green areas that today characterize the capital city. Mayor Roberto Salcedo in his opening words of the Congress said that they envision an organized city. As reported in El Caribe, the Mayor supports policies of visual elimination of contamination, creating live urban entertainment and a strategic plan. He also expressed his support for the Fernandez government proposed mega projects that call for the construction of the first metro line in Santo Domingo and for a private island in front of the city’s waterfront as part of the strategy to turn the city into a leader of the region, “a competitive city.”
President Leonel Fernandez, a vocal supporter of the metro and the island, despite having been announced, did not attend the opening of the Congress.
