The government and former President Hipolito Mejia agreed last Thursday to reduce the political tension in the country. According to Hoy newspaper, this will cool the political temperatures that have been rising for the past two weeks between the ruling PLD party and the former government party, PRD. Sources told the Hoy reporters that President Leonel Fernandez sent a letter via Monsignor Agripino Nunez Collado to former President Hipolito Mejia, inviting him to contribute to the tranquility and calm of the nation. According to the source, Monsignor Nunez Collado told Mejia that the government had the intention of contributing to a more tranquil political climate.
And the president of the Senate, Andres Bautista (PRD) met with President Fernandez during the inauguration of the new facilities at the Plaza de la Salud, and reportedly heard the same from President Fernandez.
According to the source, former President Mejia told Nunez Collado that he would accept the proposal and that he had made his statements because the current government had disrespected his PRD party and its former officials. After talking with the monsignor, Mejia got his political team together at 7:30 Friday morning to talk about the visit and to announce the cancellation of the visits that he had scheduled for San Juan de la Maguana and Elias Pina as well as Barahona and San Cristobal. At this meeting, the Senate president Bautista also told Mejia of his meeting with Fernandez and of his interest to lower the level of political tensions.
Political tensions increased with actions of state prosecutors regarding cases of corruption in the past government.
