The investigative commission that looked into the fire in the Higuey prison that killed 136 prisoners has requested voluntary homicide charges against eight prisoners and eleven Police officers, including one colonel, a major and five first lieutenants. Nine of the Police were suspended from duty and the others were fired immediately. The two dismissed agents had previously been caught smuggling cell phones and alcoholic beverages into the jail. The commission included Attorney General Francisco Dominguez Brito, the Minister of the Interior and the Police, the chief of Police, and the chief of the National Investigation Department. So far, the local fire department has not been found to have been negligent, and there are conflicting statements to just when they were informed of the fires.
