Government desists of PEME case?

News reports say that the government will not pursue the Programa Eventual Minimo de Empleo (PEME) case of fraud against the state for RD$1.48 billion. The government announced yesterday that it has cancelled the power of attorney granted to five lawyers that were in charge of the case. The government announced that it has cancelled the authorization of lawyers Eric Raful, Marino Mendoza, Tomas Castro, Herotides Rodriguez and Jeovanny Tejada that the Mejia government had appointed to defend the state. The state prosecutors announced they will not pursue the case against Diandino Pena (today Metro Minister), Simon Lizardo, Haivanjoe Ng Cortinas (today Stock Market Superintendent), Luis Inchausti, Grecia Peguero Rivera, Leon Antonio Lopez Mata and Noe Camacho.

Attorney General Francisco Dominguez Brito defended the decision saying that the team of lawyers was politically partial to the past government. He said, nevertheless, that the case would not be shelved.
