The Customs Department announced it would relocate to the former 22,000 square meter former Verizon headquarter offices on Abraham Lincoln corner John F. Kennedy. Verizon moved to a new location on John F. Kennedy avenue. Listin Diario reports that the government paid RD$1 billion for the new building. Furthermore, the newspaper says that the government has used financing from a Korean export agency for US$32 million (another RD$1 billion) to equip the new offices for the tax collection department. Miguel Cocco, director of Customs, announced the move target date is 10 August 2005. Deputy director of Customs, Eduardo Rodriguez said that the plans are to turn Customs into a modern office where importers will be able to pay taxes by Internet.
