Government to finish Guaigui dam

Frank Rodriguez, the head of the National Institute for Water Resources (INDRHI), announced that in 20 months the government would finish the Guaigui Dam in La Vega that would provide irrigation water for tens of thousands of acres of land, drinking water for the town of La Vega and electricity for the national network. The project will be carried out without the assistance of the Dominico-Norwegian Consortium NCC-OCECON. The two parties arrived at a friendly agreement whereby the US$42.5 million loan would be maintained with additional financing of up to US$35 million guaranteed to finish the job. Renewed start-up is expected within two months and completion is scheduled for another 18 months beyond start-up. Rodriguez explained that part of the financing would go to reforest the Camu River watershed and the resettling of the people affected by the reforestation process. The dam will also reduce the flooding along the Lower Yuna River that has devastated thousands of acres of rice lands in recent years.
