Jose Mesa reaches a milestone

Jose Mesa, the Dominican pitcher that one sports writer called the “man that put ‘journey’ in journeyman,” achieved a milestone yesterday as he joined Mariano Rivera and Roberto Hernandez in the exclusive club of 300 saves in Major League Baseball. Mesa, who started his big-league career as a starting pitcher, became a “closer” a “stopper” after stints with Baltimore and the Cleveland Indians. He joins an elite group of 18 pitchers all-time in the 300 Club. In 1995 he was voted the Relief Pitcher of the year and, with 46 saves, he finished second in the voting for the Cy Young Award, behind Randy Johnson who went 18-2 for the Mariners that year. Mesa saved #300 pitching for the Pittsburgh Pirates, preserving a 2-0 lead and brought his saves to 51 in 55 opportunities for the Pirates.
