Canada rescinds malaria prophylaxis

As of May 4, the Canadian Public Health Agency no longer recommends the use of anti-malarial medication for travelers to resort destinations in the eastern province of La Altagracia (Punta Cana-Bavaro). The recommendation had been instated in November after 21 visitors from Canada, the US and Europe were affected. The last reported case occurred in early January.

The PHAC, working closely with the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), the Ministry of Public Health of the DR, and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) assessed the situation and measures implemented by the local health authorities that have been effective in controlling the outbreak, concluding in the rescinding of the anti-malarial medication recommendation.

For travelers to tourist resort areas, the PHAC recommends the use of personal insect protective measures against mosquito bites. For more information, see:
