Playa Encuentro situation improves

Following a meeting with deputy minister of Tourism for Puerto Plata, Cesar Jose de los Santos, Mickey Gough, spokesman for the La Costa del Camino Viejo Movement reports that “good headway” has been made towards resolving the dispute over the closure of the access road to the leading surfer beach in the DR while at the same time regulating traffic along the beach road. De los Santos had met with coalition members. Puerto Plata businessman Juan Carlos Morales also participated in the meetings invited by De los Santos. Gough said that De los Santos, representing the Ministry of Tourism, accepted proposals for access and parking options for the beach. A second meeting was set for next week and once the proposal is approved, it could be legalized within 15 days. The proposal focuses on controlled beach access, dune protection, protection of flora and fauna, educational program, beach erosion, designation of Encuentro Beach as an official surfing area, establishing of a training and certification program for surfing instructors and the school and tour operators, lifeguard and first aid services at Playa Encuentro.
