According to the United Nations Development Program, “the main cause of Dominican poverty and the relatively low level of human development is not the lack of financing and economic resources, but rather the scarce commitment towards collective progress by the national political and business leadership over the last decades.” This statement is part of the National Report on Human Development for 2005 that the UNDP will release on Wednesday of this week. The report concludes that the Dominican Republic has entered the world dynamics in such a way that it is socially, economically and institutionally exclusive, and with a model that is not sustainable over the medium run. The report emphasizes that the lack of commitment by the business and political leaders has sharpened the inequities in spite of having resources available. The UN is recommending a development model that will be more inclusive.
