President accepts postponement of Metro

President Leonel Fernandez accepted a proposal to postpone the construction of an underground rail system for Santo Domingo. The proposal came from the government’s Economic, Social and Institutional Council that met with the President last night. Other options available to solve the problems related to public transport have been suggested, and the meeting agreed the government should look at them. In order to obtain an objective opinion on possible solutions, the President said that he will create a technical forum that will include government officials, sectors of society and experts from international organizations. The goal will be to determine the solution that is most advantageous for the nation to improve transport. Monsignor Agripino Nunez Collado, the president of the Council, told reporters from Diario Libre that all the council did was to share alternative suggestions with the President. He said the Metro project has not been discarded completely. Earlier this year, Metro Minister Diandino Pena had said he was only waiting for the green light from the President. Shortly after, President Fernandez had responded that a yellow light was showing for the metro. There has been much opposition to the metro from sectors that say that the mega project is not a priority at a time the public sector carries a debt burden of 52% of GDP.
