According to the report from the Pathology Lab, the woman who died in a lonely cell in the basement of the Las Americas International Airport last Friday was carrying 40 small bags of cocaine in her stomach and three of the bags burst, causing her death. As reported in all of today’s papers, the Attorney General released a report that said that Elisa Maria Payano, 35, who resided in the Barrio Filipina of San Pedro de Macoris, died when three of the 40 bags with cocaine exploded in her stomach. The report said that the autopsy found bags of cocaine in her vagina, her colon and her stomach. The autopsy was performed at the Forensics Institute in Santo Domingo. The total weight of the cocaine was 295 grams. The woman had been detained because one of the Immigration officials had doubts as to the authenticity of her Dutch passport. She died in the immigration holding cell at the airport. As a result of the death, the cell was ordered closed.
