Judge rejects calls for dismissal

The magistrate at the National District’s Fifth Court of Instruction has rejected a request for dismissal in the case of the recovered vehicles that were assigned to high-ranking Police officials. These vehicles were reported as stolen, recovered by the Police but not returned to their owners. The discovery of hundreds of such cases prompted a warrant to be issued for nearly two dozen current and former high-ranking Police officers, including several former chiefs. As the judge rejected all of the defense team’s petitions, the prosecutors asked the judge to send the case for trial in a criminal court. The judge did not respond to this request, but it is expected that during today’s hearing, the magistrate will rule on the motion. As a part of the ongoing investigation and hearings at the Court of First Instance, sergeant Alfredo Santana Melido was declared in contempt of court for failing to appear before the magistrate after being served with warrants. The magistrate asked that the sergeant’s personal information be placed in the newspapers in order for him to be found and arrested. Among the more notorious members of the Police that are cited in the complaint are former chief of Police Jaime Marte Martinez and current head of AMET, general Sigfrido Fadul Fernandez.
