President of Costa Rica apologizes

President Abel Pacheco of Costa Rica said he would return the honorary membership to the Cap Cana beach club he received during a recent visit to the Dominican Republic. Pacheco made a stopover in the DR on his way back to Costa Rica after attending the Washington, D.C. FTA summit. He attended the inauguration ceremony of the Caleton Beach Club in the luxury residential development of Cap Cana. After an audit was carried out into his travel expenses, it was determined that the state did not cover these, as he was given a lift on President Leonel Fernandez’s private flight. The Hazoury group that heads the investments in Cap Cana, has said it contemplates making investments in Costa Rica in the near future. Costa Rican law impedes government officers from accepting invitations that include airfares, meals and other benefits, unless they are sponsored by international organizations, or foreign governments.
