War against visual contamination

Santo Domingo Mayor Roberto Salcedo has announced that he will not allow the city to be littered with political propaganda. The three leading political parties’ internal election processes have led to the posting of billboards and posters of leadership hopefuls across the city. Likewise, the municipal and congressional elections are due in May 2006. Salcedo says that he has sent city government brigades to remove banners, posters and billboards posted in inappropriate places where they could cause visual pollution to the city. He said that the municipality would soon be designating areas where the propaganda would be permitted. He explained the brigades have removed around 8,000 posters over the past two months.

“The city cannot return to the days when the light posts, fences and even power cables were saturated with political propaganda,” said Salcedo.
