Rains caused lingering damage

It must be really scary to wake up one morning and find out that your front door opens into an abyss. According to El Caribe, there are 90 houses along creeks in Santiago that are in this very situation. In the El Embrujo, La Mosca and La Mina sectors of the city, houses are still falling into the creeks as a result of the heaviest rainfall in over 30 years. The rains, 226 centimeters (10 ? “) fell in May and the resulting landslides have caused the closure of one street (“O” Street) in El Embrujo where five houses have cracked open, and 50 houses in La Mosca are on the edge of the creek bank. In La Mina, 18 houses have already fallen into the waterway and another 40 are seriously threatened. Local Civil Defense authorities are warning that at least 16,000 families are in potentially dangerous areas in case another large rainfall occurs during this hurricane season.
