The City Hall of Santo Domingo has plans to move the police station on Mirador del Sur park to the area near Anacaona Avenue and Caonabo Street and use the current facilities for the installation of an environmental education and information center, as reported in Hoy newspaper. The program has the cooperation of Japan. However, residents near the new proposed police station site are opposed to the plans. They argue that the area would become a service offices center affecting the quality of the environs. City Hall secretary, Domingo Contreras, said the proposed center would have equipment to measure the temperature in the city, the emission of smog and noise. Elvira Lora, the spokesperson for the families that are opposed to the change said the City Hall has been talking about this for some time but the families thought the plans had been discarded. However, they noticed work had started about a week and a half ago, with the building of a new entrance into the park. The neighbors of the area want the park to keep its original function related to recreation and family relaxation.
