AMCHAM requests reforms

The president of the American Chamber of Commerce (AMCHAM), Kevin Manning, has stated that the country needs to pass a key law on competition and international arbitration, as well as to reform the customs system. It also needs to resolve multiple agricultural issues that hinder Dominican exports, as reported in Hoy. In a letter to Dominican congressmen, Manning also mentions the importance of approving the DR-CAFTA agreement as soon as possible. He says that the country must not postpone a program of reforms that includes the strengthening and modernization of the legal and organizational framework of government institutions that have the responsibility of administering and implementing the treaty. He believes that this program should include the design and implementation of a trade facilitation project, focusing on the transformation of customs administration and the establishment of effective and transparent information systems to expedite the flow of goods. Manning also mentions the support of a group of Democratic Party leaders for DR-CAFTA and his expectation that the treaty would be approved by the US Congress between late June and mid-July.
