Expulsion of Haitians affects agriculture

Agriculture Minister Amilcar Romero wants the Dominican government to look for a definitive solution for illegal Haitian laborers working in the agricultural sector, because they represent an important part of the workforce for national production, which is necessary for the country to compete in international markets. His ministry has been holding meetings with the Ministry of Labor and the Department of Immigration for the enforcement of migratory laws, not only as applied to Haitians, but also to any other person entering the DR illegally. The minister reiterated that solutions must be sought for conditions to be different. He wants the agriculture sector organized so that production won’t be affected. Romero said that the government must consider labor agreements between the two countries (DR and Haiti) so that the workforce supply is kept at a normal level.
