Defending the banking system

El Caribe reports that Participacion Ciudadana (PC) has criticized the media campaign against the financial system, the Central Bank and its governor, Hector Valdez Albizu, carried out by sectors connected to those accused of bank fraud. The campaign comes at a time when the court that is processing the Baninter case is close to sentencing, according to the organization. They state that the campaign is meant to discredit the 2003 banking fraud cases which cost the country US$2 billion, and which are the direct cause – together with the way the authorities handled the crisis – of the enormous quasi-fiscal deficit in the Central Bank, amounting to more than RD$130 billion. Participacion Ciudadana expressed its opinion in a document sent to the media.
