International organizations have found that a network of traffickers of young children, working with Dominican drivers and military personnel along the border with Haiti have become a major headache. Many of these children are sent to beg in the streets of Santo Domingo and other large cities. Others live with relatives who already reside in the Dominican Republic. The situation has attracted the attention of UNICEF, the United Nations Children’s Fund, and the International Organization on Migrations. Around 3,000 children are said to cross the border each year, according to the report in Diario Libre. The traffickers even use government resources in order to transport the children. Diario Libre cites the case of an ambulance that came from Haiti with its siren going full blast. It carried 15 children. The driver was arrested and sent to court. An interesting facet of the operation is that many of the children attend school in Haiti and take advantage of the summer vacation to come to the DR. While many return once school restarts, others remain in the country, begging on street corners or working.
