Hipolito speaks out

Former President Hipolito Mejia spoke out yesterday saying his “honeymoon” with the government was over and that he would no longer allow anyone to go around ruining his reputation. “My patience has run out,” said the leader of a faction of the PRD, in reference to a libel campaign that has allegedly been launched against him. He said that the letter he sent to President Leonel Fernandez last week was meant to refute information making the PRD administration responsible for the banking crisis in the country in 2003. He also complained that his administration was being linked to the increase in drug trafficking in the DR, as well as with the recent murder of Angel Manuel Bello Perez in an ambush on the 27 de Febrero Expressway, and the attack on journalist Euri Cabral. The former President also defended and classified as exemplary the signing of DR-CAFTA with the US, saying that the agreement would be very beneficial for the DR, as the nations involved will open their markets to national products.
