In spite of a huge publicity campaign, more than 100,000 vehicles have yet to purchase their license renewal stickers. The Metropolitan Transport Authority has announced that, as from tomorrow, vehicles that do not display their renewal stickers will be towed away. With many kiosks located in the principal commercial establishments around the city, plus Internet access and telephone access, the process is simple and quick.
However, the rush of last minute drivers at some locations has created some lines. Many people left the renewal for last minute, counting on that there would be the customary renewal date extension. This has not happened this year.
As late as last week, motorists could obtain their renewals in less than a minute at most of the kiosks in Santiago or Santo Domingo. Basically, all that is required is a photocopy of the vehicle’s registration certificate (matr?cula) and a photocopy of one’s c?dula, or personal ID card. Vehicles from 1999 pay RD$2200 and vehicles that are 1998 models or older, pay just RD$1200.
