President Leonel Fernandez has stated that he is open to studying the most appropriate public transport system for Santo Domingo, and classified the current system as
"chaotic, disorganized, inadequate and expensive" and said that the only solution to this problem would be the construction of a system such as the metro. He said that although the idea of building a metro in the city had generated much controversy, it is crucial to have a fast urban public transport system at the city’s disposal. He backed up this argument with the fact that the DR currently spends RD$1,5 billion on the purchase of fuel, mainly for transportation. The President was speaking at the international forum
"Looking Ahead to Public Transportation in Santo Domingo" organized by the Economic, Social and Institutional Council lead by Msgr. Agripino Nunez Collado, to coincide with the 509th anniversary of the founding of Santo Domingo, today. Thirteen foreign speakers are attending the forum, which is sponsored by Universidad Autonoma de Santo Domingo, Universidad Iberoamericana, Florida International University, the Dominican Board of Engineers and Architects, and the Dominican Construction Chamber.
