Jacinto Ayala, winner of two gold and two silver medals in the recently concluded Central American and Caribbean Swimming Championships made the time to qualify for competing in the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. He clocked up a time of 23:32 in the 50m freestyle race, breaking the record of 23:67 held by Francisco Sanchez since 1993, as reported in the Listin Diario. Other gold medal winners were Mariel Bros in synchronized swimming and Alfonso Espinosa and Laura Rodriguez in swimming. The DR came fifth in the regional event, behind Mexico, Venezuela, Cuba and Puerto Rico. Trinidad and Jamaica were in the 7th and 8th place in the tournament.
