Former Haitian consul in the DR Edwin Paraisson has commended the decision by the authorities to pick up women begging with children on city streets and deliver them to the Haitian consular authorities in the country, as reported in Hoy newspaper. Nevertheless, Paraisson said that the authorities should identify who is behind that situation. He highlighted that the women need to cross the frontier, passing military checkpoints in order to arrive in Santo Domingo and be placed at key city cross sections to do their “job” of begging with small children. Several reports have pointed out this is a people-smuggling ring, and that in most cases the children are not even the women’s own. Migration Director Carlos Amarante Baret said recently that the women would be picked up and delivered to the Haitian consulate.
