Organization of American States secretary general Jose Miguel Insulza will speak on “Governance in Latin America” at an event scheduled for 7:30 this evening at the auditorium of the School of Diplomacy of the Ministry of Foreign Relations. President Leonel Fernandez and Foreign Relations Minister Carlos Morales Troncoso will also be speaking at the event. The Ministry of Foreign Relations says that the conference is part of a follow-up to agreements that seek the strengthening of inter-government ties for the promotion of democracy, consensus and governance. The event will be transmitted on TV by the state TV station, Channel 4. Also attending the conference as special guests are Chilean senators Andres Saldivar Larran and Ricardo Nunez Munoz, and the former President of Colombia, Belisario Betancourt. A lawyer by profession, Insulza took the post as secretary general of the OAS on 26 May. Previously, he was the Chilean interior minister, and a political advisor at the Ministry of Foreign Relations, as well as director of his country’s School of Diplomacy.
