Leonel and CONEP get together

A three-hour meeting between the President, Leonel Fernandez and the leadership of the National Council for Private Enterprise (CONEP) has apparently smoothed the path for the passage of the tax reform proposal now before Congress. At least, according to Diario Libre, the two parties managed to come closer to an understanding on the tax reform issue, and so this afternoon’s meeting of the National Dialogue could well see a “more consensual” proposal that will allow for a competitive stance for business and the compensation of the government treasury for the loss of funds that the FTA with the US will imply. On the government side of the table were President Fernandez, Danilo Medina, Temistocles Montas, Miguel Cocco and Juan Hernandez. On the CONEP side were Elena Viyella de Paliza, Yandra Portela and Jose Miguel Bonetti. A committee will be named later today to draw up the necessary legislative proposals.
