EU invests in bi-national projects

Hoy reports that the European Union is supporting the construction of fundamental infrastructure works for the economic development of the DR-Haitian Border, among which is a road that will connect Cap-Haitien with Dajabon, according to Onofre Rojas, Director of the European Development Funds office (ONFED). The road, which represents an investment of EUR128 million, is the most important of a series of bi-national projects which include a new bridge over the Masacre River and a new market building in Dajabon. A Customs and Immigration building will also be built in Dajabon. This program is part of a Cross-Border Bi-National Strategic Plan proposed during a meeting in Haiti with the participation of UNDP and EU representatives and the two coordinators of EU funds from both countries, together with the participation of government authorities. Health projects to be developed along the DR-Haitian border have to do with HIV/Aids, malaria and tuberculosis. Rojas also stated that feasibility studies are being carried out for the possible construction of domestic airports in Pedernales, Dajabon, Independencia and Montecristi.
