“Jeepetocracy” prevails

Que Se Dice column in Hoy newspaper comments today that it is not just ministers who are eligible for state-funded luxury vehicles, but lower ranking officials too. The columnist points out that the “yipetocracia” has no mercy for the woes of the Dominican people, and keeps on growing, while the government’s thirst for taxes has the same effect. The columnist points out that the import of all-terrain vehicles, known as “yipetas” in the DR, and other luxury and high fuel consumption vehicles has increased, with a greater than ever presence in government circles and the multiple and increasing decentralized government institutions. “It is disgusting to see how in official sectors there is so much weakness for the purchase of vehicles that express opulence and increase non-essential spending by a government whose authorities have difficulty to buy insulin for basic services in hospitals,” writes the columnist.
