Santiago businessmen oppose metro

The Santiago Chamber of Commerce and Production has voiced concerns that the cost of the Santo Domingo Metro will be US$750 million, at a time when there are thousands of important public works required for the development of different provinces that are stopped due to a lack of resources. According to a press release, the organization criticizes the project for representing a 10% increase in international public debt and because its construction is being carried out without tender. The Chamber admits there has been improvement in the electricity service but worries that it continues to be based on outdated models such as the government subsidy. It criticizes what it terms “poor” efforts to increase collections for the energy service and believes that the increase in tariff is excessive and is the main hindrance to achieving better collections for the service. The Chamber also complains that during the last year there was no control over administrative corruption nor migration.
