Dead beat dads

The Attorney General’s office announced yesterday that between 60 and 70 parents are subjected to arrest each and every day for non-payment of child support. The assistant prosecutor for children’s affairs, Marisol Tobal, told reporters from the El Caribe that together with General Crecencio Jaquez Hernandez, her office was pursuing these dead beats and that between eight and ten have recently been sent to jail. Two mothers were also sent to Najayo Prison for failing to pay child support. When fathers want to travel outside of the country the law, Law 136-03, article 182, requires the father to deposit one year’s child support payments or guarantees thereof.
