Assistant district attorney Marisol Tobal lamented the fact that minors have resorted to stealing and selling even the pots and pans from their homes to play the one-armed bandits located in small corner supermarkets, called “colmadones”, and other illegal sites. The Justice Department representative told reporters from the Listin Diario that there are thousands of these machines installed in businesses frequented by minors. She promised that the fight against illegal installation of these machines would not cease, and she reported that 218 of the machines were seized in recent raids and will be destroyed shortly. The assistant district attorney is the national coordinator for Boy, Girls and Adolescents for the Justice Department and she leads the operations carried out by the Judicial Police commanded by General Crecencio Jaquez Hernandez. The official reminded the reporters of the tragic case of the young man who committed suicide after he lost the RD$800 pesos that his father had given him for a second time to purchase a pair of sneakers. She promised to continue jailing those who are repeat offenders as well as seize any and all of the machines.
