PRSD president Hatuey De Camps has discarded the alliance that was being negotiated with PLD, in which the two parties would field common candidates in the May 2006 congressional and municipal elections. De Camps explained that President Fernandez was unwilling to give up the senator’s seats for La Vega and Samana. During a press conference, De Camps defended the popularity of PRSD candidates in those two provinces, Cuqui Medrano and Ramiro Espino. He also referred to the candidates in San Cristobal and Bani, Porfirio Rojas Nina and Henry Mejia, respectively, whom he defined as very strong leaders, something that he felt Dr. Fernandez did not take into account. De Camps pointed out that the failure to reach an agreement did not mean that his party did not enjoy good relations with the government.
As in the case of the PRSD and PLD alliance, the much touted PRD and PRSC alliance seems to be weakening for the same reason. Party leaders can’t agree on who will be the candidates for the senatorial and city government positions. The trend for now seems to be that the majority parties will end up going at it alone in the congressional and municipal parties, backing their own candidates and letting the voting public decide.
