Pena: Metro won’t affect theater

According to the Office for the Reorganization of Transport Director Diandino Pena, the construction of the metro in the capital’s Cultural Plaza will does not represent any danger for the National Theater. Yesterday, El Caribe published opinions by architect Leopoldo Espaillat Nanitas and geologist and Academy of Sciences member Osiris de Leon, who warned that the construction of a metro station at a short distance from the National Theater could pose a threat to the building. Pena rejected these opinions by saying that the distance from the station to the theater and the depth of the excavation will not allow the vibrations to reach the theater’s structure. The excavation is 30 to 40 meters away from the building and there is a mass of rock that could only be moved by an earthquake, as reported by Pena. As for the vibrations, Pena said that the machinery is not strong enough to transmit vibrations through all that stone and reach the theater.
