Widowed mother of 10 receives home

Santa de los Santos is the widow of workman Mariano de los Santos, who was attacked and murdered 16 December 2005 near his home in Bayona, leaving her to raise 10 children of 19, 17, 15, 13, 12, 10, 9, 8, 5, and 1. The government has given her a house, a bank account with RD$50,000, a job for her older son and the order to register all her children in schools around San Luis. According to a report by Diario Libre, the title deed for the house was delivered by President Fernandez who said that “this simple ceremony is full of emotion in the sense that the state provides help to an especially needy family”. The house was blessed by Cardinal Lopez Rodriguez who highlighted the government’s sensitivity to this family’s tragic case. The case became known after a Listin Diario journalist told of the mother’s plight.
