Sociologist Rosario Espinal, director of the Center of Latin American Studies at Temple University in Philadelphia, USA, warns that Haiti is a Dominican problem, and should be treated as such. Espinal was being interviewed by the Corripio communications group. She said that this is because the two countries share the same island, and because of the large numbers of Haitian nationals who have migrated to the DR. She said that in the country the so-called nationalists have got it all wrong. She said that to focus on Haiti as something that is a problem for Dominicans is the same as saying that Mexico is not a problem for the United States. She said that given that the DR is more developed than Haiti, Haitians will migrate in pursuit of a better livelihood. She said as long as businessmen provide the jobs, Haitians will come in the same way Dominicans migrate to Puerto Rico or Haiti.
