More troops for frontier

Three hundred more Dominican troops have been sent to the border town of Dajabon. They are members of the Air Force and the First Brigade, the Army’s elite brigade. The soldiers will reinforce the patrols along the frontier in an effort to supervise the Army’s efforts to control the illegal migrations coming from Haiti. Currently, the Armed Forces are engaged in Operation Cowboy II, and the Army is preparing for the re-opening of the frontier, which was closed for several days after violence erupted following the discovery of the two dozen victims who suffocated in the back of a closed truck while trying to enter the Dominican Republic. The area remains tense, according to reports. The new troops will join the 1,200 already participating in Operation Cowboy II in the areas around Jimani and Montecristi. Yesterday, a few trucks were allowed to cross into Haiti with merchandise; farm workers were allowed to enter the rice farming areas of Dajabon, and today it is expected that small groups will be allowed to enter Dominican territory, ten at a time. Special attention will be placed on those areas where the traditional markets are taking place.
