Violent storm hits Santiago

A violent thunderstorm hit Santiago on Saturday afternoon, causing at least one, possibly two deaths and injuring several others. Trees and signposts were torn down and a small bridge was swept away by the floodwaters. Reportedly, a Haitian national was carried away by the Gurabo River’s torrential flow. In the Embrujo III area, a young man, Miguel de Jesus Castillo, 30, drove his motorcycle into a flooded ditch and was trapped by the overturned motorcycle, drowning before he could be rescued. Witnesses said that the motorcycle was traveling without a headlight. Reports in both La Informacion and Listin Diario tell of many houses losing roofing. Some roofs were damaged by falling trees. The areas of Canabacoa, Laguna Prieta, Punal, Colorado, Matanzas and Arenoso were worst affected.
