No homicides in “safe” neighborhoods

There have been no homicides in the 13 Santo Domingo neighborhoods that form part of the Democratic Security Plan during the last nine days, according to Police Chief Bernardo Santana Paez. However, 15 people have been wounded by gunshots, eight with knives, there have been two assaults and four portions of drugs were seized. Diario Libre reports that Santana gave this information after presenting 59 vehicles that will be used to patrol the neighborhoods. The program has 15 all-terrain SUVs – which were purchased through a United Nations program – six SUVs with integrated laptops and six double-cabin pickup trucks, with an investment of US$822,000. Since the beginning of the security program 21 Harley Davidson motorcycles have been purchased at US$17,000 each, as well as 11 cars that are being used for patrolling. Interior and Police Minister Franklin Almeyda has said that an additional 300 vehicles will be purchased for this program. The “Safe Neighborhood” plan is taking place in Capotillo, Espaillat, Luperon, Simon Bolivar, Guachupita, Gualey, La Cienaga, La Zurza, Las Canitas, Los Guandules, 24 de Abril, 27 de Febrero and Villas Agricolas.
