The National Treasurer, Ruben Pena Pichardo has told the Listin Diario that the government would be paying all government employees today, Friday 27 January. An electronic systems glitch resulted in most government employees not getting their pay on the usual payday, the 25th of the month. Most employees get paid by debit cards, with the government depositing the funds in each department’s accounts for employees to draw on. The glitch also affected employees who are paid by check. Reporters from Listin said that employees had not received their pay as of Thursday.
The government is making these payments based on the 2005 budget, since Congress has not passed the 2006 budget.
