Cops ambushed and killed

Two Police sergeants assigned to the Department of Criminal Investigation were ambushed and killed while they were on patrol in the La Gloria barrio at Kilometer 18 of the old Duarte Highway. Sergeants Alifonso Moreno and Ramon Antonio Abreu were killed at 8:45 last evening in a dark, isolated area of La Gloria. The crime occurred at the same time the President was inaugurating the new computer system that hooks up all of the police stations. According to sources, the Listin Diario reports that the two policemen were shot from a gray, beat-up vehicle. Reports last night say that a vehicle of that description was located and the two occupants were taken into custody. Both men were in civilian attire. Sergeant Abreu was the first to die, falling alongside his motorcycle. Sergeant Moreno, wounded, tried to flee, but was found about 100 yards from his partner. Sources close to the scene said that the motive for the killings was apparently not to steal the motorcycle, which was found at the scene nor the sidearm of the sergeant, which was also recovered. The sidearm and personal effects of the other sergeant were, however, not recovered, although the Police have not confirmed this version.
