The former director of the Commission to Reform Public Businesses (CREP), Felix Alcantara, was forced to put up RD$5.0 million in bail bond after the judge of instruction ruled against him. Judge Jose A. Garcia said that preventive custody was not needed in this case since he did not consider Alcantara to be a flight risk. Alcantara is accused of mishandling RD$27.0 millions of public funds. The prosecutors have asked that Alcantara be held for trial. The former official is being pursued by the Department for the Prevention of Corruption (DEPRECO) for swindling $27 million during his time as head of CREP. The judge also said that there was sufficient evidence to send the case to trial in the criminal courts. Among the items revealed in the charges against Alcantara are a check for US$77,000 written in October of 2004 to Conair and in September if 2004 a check for RD$6 million in favor of his chauffeur Rafael Adams. Alcantara is also implicated in wrongful acts regarding the purchase of a Toyota Land Cruiser and three Isuzu trucks in 2005.
